Second Runner-up in the Kowloon Chamber of Commerce (KCC) New Century Elite Development Program

Our Year 4 BSc Computer Science student Mr LABIB Mahir, together with his teammates from other local universities, has won the Second Runner-up in the Kowloon Chamber of Commerce (KCC) New Century Elite Development Program

As part of this distinguished recognition, Mahir and his teammates were among the top fifteen finalist teams selected for an exchange trip to Malaysia from 15 to 21 August 2024.  During this trip, they had the unique opportunity to visit local companies and participate in a challenging Business Case Final Competition.  The competition centered on designing a sustainable business model for Sabang Island in Indonesia, which demanded a deep understanding of financial modeling, innovative technology solutions and modern business strategies.  Competing against strong teams from different regions, their outstanding efforts earned them the Second Runner-up position and a prize of HKD 4,000.

Champion in IEEE (Hong Kong) Computational Intelligence Chapter Postgraduate Student Research Paper Competition 2024

CS PhD student Mr Fei LIU, in collaboration with Prof Qingfu ZHANGProf Zhichao LU and five other scholars, has won the Champion award in IEEE (Hong Kong) Computational Intelligence Chapter Postgraduate Student Research Paper Competition 2024

Their paper, titled “Evolution of Heuristics: Towards Efficient Automatic Algorithm Design Using Large Language Model”, proposes Evolution of Heuristic (EoH), a novel evolutionary paradigm that leverages both Large Language Models (LLMs) and Evolutionary Computation (EC) methods for Automatic Heuristic Design (AHD).  Remarkably, the heuristic generated by EoH with a low computational budget (measured by the number of queries to LLMs) significantly outperforms human hand-crafted baseline algorithms for solving the online bin packing problem.

The Hong Kong Chapter of IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) has been a central hub for coordinating local conference and supporting advancements in Computational Intelligence, encompassing neural networks, fuzzy systems, evolutionary computations, and other computational paradigms inspired by biology and linguistics.
