China Collegiate Computing Contest – Mobile Application Innovation Contest 2018

Two BSc Computer Science students, Mr WONG Man Fai and Miss FAN Cheuk Hang, together with a student from PolyU, won the Second Prize in the 2018 China Collegiate Computing Contest – Mobile Application Innovation Contest, under the supervision of Dr Antoni CHAN.

Hosted by Apple Incorporated and the Zhejiang University, the Contest aims to raise students’ awareness of innovation and encourage students to solve problems with technology. The Contest attracted around 600 teams from universities in China to compete for the awards.

IET Prize 2018

Mr CHUI Tsz Him, a BSc Computer Science student, received the IET Prize 2018, and was granted a cash prize of HK$3,000 and a complimentary student membership of the IET for one year.

Hosted by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the IET Prize is awarded to engineering students with outstanding academic results and active in extra-curricular activities and community service.

Excellence Research Award 2018 from the SIGSE of the Information Processing Society of Japan

Two PhD graduates of 2018, Dr Kwabena Ebo BENNIN and Dr Solomon MENSAH, together with their supervisor Dr Jacky KEUNG and two other authors, received the Excellence Research Award from the Special Interest Group on Software Engineering (SIGSE) of the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ) for their co-authored paper titled “MAHAKIL: Diversity based oversampling approach to alleviate the class imbalance issue in software defect prediction,” published in the IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering in June 2018.

Microsoft Imagine Cup National Final 2018

Three BSc Computer Science students, Mr WONG Man Fai, Miss FAN Cheuk Hang and Miss CHAN Wing Sze, won the 2nd Runner-up in 2018 Microsoft Imagine Cup National Final – Hong Kong for their project titled “Ani-Think”, which provides a mobile solution in veterinary pathology for animal sentiment analysis and disease diagnosis. The winning team received a cash prize of HKD$1,000 and is entitled to a fast-track interview opportunity to Cyberport’s entrepreneurship programmes.

Honorable Mention Award in the Graph Challenge 2018

Mr HANG Ching Nam, a BScCS student, and Mr YU Pei Duo, a CS PhD student, together with their supervisor Dr Chee Wei TAN and another author, received the Honorable Mention Award in the Graph Challenge 2018, for their co-authored paper titled “Parallel Counting of Triangles in Large Graphs: Pruning and Hierarchical Clustering Algorithms.” The paper was also published in the conference proceedings of the IEEE High Performance Extreme Computing (HPEC) 2018.

1st Runner-up in Classified Post Hackathon 2018

Three BSc Computer Science students, Mr KWOK Ping Chung, Mr LO Shu Fai and Mr NG Tsz Wing, together with two SEEM students, won the 1st Runner-up in the Media Category in Classified Post Hackathon 2018 for their project titled “ATM,” which implements new functions on recruitment websites to provide job seekers with coaching and advice on career planning. The winning team received a cash prize of HKD$5,000.

The Most Innovative Award in the PwC’s Data-lympics 2019

Two BSc Computer Science students, Mr Archit CHOUDHURY and Mr TAI Lok Yin, together with two other CityU students, won the Most Innovative Award in the PwC’s Data-lympics 2019.

Organized by the PricewaterhouseCoopers Hong Kong, the two-day competition provides an opportunity for participants to test their data science skills in discovering useful insights from large and complex datasets, with 41 teams of University students competing in these data analytics challenges.

First Runner-up in the Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition (YPEC) 2019 and Third Prize in the 5th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition 2019

Mr CHUI Chi Ho, a final year BSc Computer Science student, won the First Runner-up in the Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition (YPEC) 2019 organized by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and the Third Prize in the 5th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition 2019 organized by Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association, under the supervision of Dr Raymond WONG.

Best VC Paper Award in the International Conference on Computer Graphics (CGI) 2019

Miss Qianhui Men, a PhD student, together with her supervisor Dr Howard Leung, received the Best VC Paper Award for their co-authored paper titled “Retrieval of Spatial-temporal Motion Topics from 3D Skeleton Data” in the 36th International Conference on Computer Graphics (CGI) 2019 held in June 2019 in Calgary, Canada.

CGI is a prestigious international conference for researchers to present their latest algorithms, models and technologies, and explore new trends and ideas on various computer graphics topics.
