Silver Award of HKEIA Innovation & Technology Project Competition Award 2019

Mr Ching Nam HANG, a BScCS 2019 graduate and a PhD student, won the Silver Award of HKEIA Innovation & Technology Project Competition Award 2019 for his final year project titled “Large Graph Mining: Subgraph Isomorphism, ” under the supervision of Dr Chee Wei TAN. Mr Hang received a cash prize of HK$20,000 with a Certificate of Merit.

Organized by the Hong Kong Electronic Industries Association (HKEIA), the Competition aims to recognize and reward students with outstanding projects which demonstrate excellence in technology and innovation.

Best Paper Award in the 5th International Conference on Big Data Computing and Communications (BigCom) 2019

Mr Luning WANG, Mr Zhongzheng TANG and Miss Qian XU, PhD students, together with their supervisors Prof Jianping WANG (Wang) and Prof Xiaohua JIA (Tang), received the Best Paper Award for their co-authored paper titled “SNIFF: A Scalable Network Inference Framework for Measuring End-to-End Performance Based on Matrix Completion” in the 5th International Conference on Big Data Computing and Communications (BigCom) 2019 held in Qingdao, China in August 2019.

Best Paper Award in the IEEE 5th International Conference on Data Science and Systems (DSS) 2019

Mr Ning LI, a PhD student, and his supervisor Dr Ted CHOW, together with Dr Jiadong ZHANG, a 2015 PhD graduate, received the Best Paper Award for their co-authored paper titled "Seeded-BTM: Enabling Biterm Topic Model with Seeds for Product Aspect Mining" in the IEEE 5th International Conference on Data Science and Systems (DSS) 2019 held in Zhangjiajie, China in August 2019.

DSS provides a prime international forum for researchers, industry practitioners and domain experts to exchange the latest advances in Data Science and Data Systems as well as their synergy.

First Place Award in the iDASH Privacy & Security Workshop 2019

A joint team of undergraduate students from the City University of Hong Kong and Zhejiang University won the First Place Award in the “Track 3: Privacy-preserving Machine Learning as a Service on SGX” of the iDASH Privacy & Security Workshop 2019 - Secure Genome Analysis Competition, held in October 2019 in Bloomington, Indiana USA, under the joint supervision of Dr Cong WANG (CityU) and Prof Yajin ZHOU (Zhejiang U).

Best Paper Award in the 5th IEEE International Conference on Big Data Intelligence and Computing (DataCom) 2019

Mr Zhi ZENG, a PhD student, and his supervisor Dr Ted CHOW, together with Dr Jiadong ZHANG, a 2015 PhD graduate, received the Best Paper Award for their co-authored paper titled "SSN: A Spatial Semantic Network for High-accuracy, Stable and Generalized Intent Detection" in the 5th IEEE International Conference on Big Data Intelligence and Computing (DataCom) 2019 held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan in November 2019.

DataCom is an international forum for engineers and scientists to present their ideas and experiences in the field of Big Data intelligence and computing.

International Collegiate Programming Contests (ICPC) 2019

CS students made impressive achievements in the International Collegiate Programming Contests (ICPC) 2019 under the supervision of Dr Minming LI and Dr Kenneth LEE.

A team of BSc Computer Science students comprising Mr DONG Qihua, Mr ZHAI Xingyu and Mr ZHENG Leqian won the Bronze Medal in the 44th ICPC Asia Regional Contest (Nanchang) 2019 held in Nanchang, China in November 2019.

Emirates Grand Prize Winner in TartanHacks 2020

Mr Michael LIM, a Year 2 BSc Computer Science student currently on exchange at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the USA, was awarded the Emirates Grand Prize Winner in TartanHacks 2020, organized by ScottyLabs at CMU in February 2020. Mr Lim formed a multi-cultural team with three students from CMU and other overseas universities. The collaboration led to the development of the award winning system, which tracks customers’ locations and provides various personalized services to customers in an airport through a mobile application.

Best Paper Award in the IEEE 3rd International Conference on Multimedia Information Processing and Retrieval (IEEE MIPR) 2020

Mr Weijing CHEN, a 2019 graduate of MSc Computer Science, together with his supervisor Dr Linqi SONG and a professor from Tianjin University, received the Best Paper Award for their co-authored paper titled “Enhancing Deep Multimedia Recommendations Using Graph Embeddings” in the IEEE 3rd International Conference on Multimedia Information Processing and Retrieval (IEEE MIPR) 2020 held virtually in August 2020. The paper was based on Mr Chen’s research work in his postgraduate studies.

Best Student Paper Runner Up Award in British Machine Vision Virtual Conference (BMVC2020)

Mr TIAN Xin, a PhD student, together with his supervisor Dr Rynson LAU, received the Best Student Paper Runner Up Award for their co-authored paper titled “Weakly-supervised Salient Instance Detection” in the 31st British Machine Vision Virtual Conference (BMVC2020) held in September 2020.

Hosted by the British Machine Vision Association (BMVA), BMVC is a prestigious annual conference on machine vision, image processing, and pattern recognition.
