Best Paper Award in the 25th International Conference on Computer Communication and Networks (ICCCN) 2016
Mr Wen QI and Miss Hermine HOVHANNISYAN, CS PhD students, together with their supervisor Dr Jianping WANG, received the Best Paper Award for their co-authored paper titled 'A Generic Mitigation Framework against Cross-VM Covert Channels' in the 25th International Conference on Computer Communication and Networks (ICCCN) 2016, held in Hawaii, USA in August 2016.
ICCCN is one of the leading international conferences for presenting novel ideas and fundamental advances in the fields of computer communications and networks.
Second Prize in the 2016 Intel Cup Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest
Miss ZHANG Jialing and Mr DU Yuefeng, BSc Computer Science students, together with Miss XIE Mingying, an EE student, were awarded the Second Prize in the 2016 Intel Cup Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest-Embedded System Design Invitational Contest, held in Shanghai, China in July 2016, under the supervision of Dr TAN Chee Wei.
Co-organized by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Intel, the biennial national contest provides an opportunity for students to design a working system based on an assigned Intel embedded platform over a period of three months. This year, the Contest attracted 160 teams from 74 universities in the Mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, Singapore, India, Mexico, Brazil, and the United States.
Third Prize in the Challenge Cup National Competition Hong Kong Regional Final 2016
Mr CHOW Tak Shing, a 2016 graduate of BSc (Hons) Computer Science, and Mr XU Yaohai, a Year 3 student of BSc Computer Science, received the Third Prize for their project titled "Large-Scale Stylometric Database" in the "Challenge Cup" National Competition Hong Kong Regional Final - Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition 2016 in the Category of Innovation (Information Technology). The team proposed a novel solution for plagiarism detection using stylometry, which is a technique often used to identify the author of a document with unknown or disputed authorship.
Organized by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association (HKNGCA), the Competition provides an opportunity for academic exchanges and a platform for the search of innovative and entrepreneurship talents from the tertiary institutions in Hong Kong. The Competition attracted over 100 entries in 2016.
Second Runner-Up in the ISACA Student Group Annual Case Competition 2016
Mr LYU Mengxuan and Mr PANDA Sourav, BSc Computer Science students, together with Ms JIANG Zhuoran, an IS undergraduate student, were awarded the Second Runner-Up placing in the ISACA Student Group Annual Case Competition 2016, with cash prize of HK$ 6,000, for their project on wearable computing devices, under the supervision of Dr Gerhard Hancke.
Groups were asked to propose security controls and apply risk analysis to topics related to this year’s case study on "IoT Risks and Security". After two initial rounds of judging, the final teams were given the opportunity to publicly present their ideas to a panel of industry experts and audience as part of IT Fest 2016.
Organised by the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) China HK Chapter, along with the ISACA Student Groups of HKUST and CityU, the contest encourages the development of young talent in the field of IT security. The contest was open to undergraduate students at any of Hong Kong's Universities and attracted 65 entries in 2016.
