Second Runner-up in BOCHK FinTech Hackathon 2018

Three BScCS students, Mr THIAGARAJAN Kowshik Balaji, Mr CHENG Ho Wang Andreas and Mr LIANG Qiyuan, together with two students from AP and EE, won the Second Runner-up in the Tertiary Group of BOCHK FinTech Hackathon 2018 for their proposal titled “PocketIn”. The cross-disciplinary team aimed to solve the challenge of money management and maintaining personal portfolios by using an intelligent AI financial assistant. The winning team received a cash prize of HKD 30,000, and has been offered a fast-track interview opportunity to Cyberport Creative Micro Fund (CCMF) or Cyberport Incubation Programme.

Organized by the Bank of China (Hong Kong), BOCHK FinTech Hackathon 2018, with the theme on “Future Bank and AI”, encouraged participants to propose innovative ideas on future payment, optimizing investment opportunities and improving banking services with the use of AI technology.

Third Place Award in the Digital China and HKUST-BDI Cup “Smart City in Hong Kong” Competition 2017

Two BScCS students, Mr CHONG Wai Man and Mr WU Wing Hong, won the Third Place Award in the Digital China and HKUST-BDI Cup “Smart City in Hong Kong” Competition 2017 for their project titled “Project-City,” which aimed to develop a Fire Services Information System to facilitate the command and control work of fire and rescue services. The winning team received a cash prize of HKD 2,000.

Co-organized by the Digital China and the Big Data Institute of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the Competition encouraged participants to create and evaluate new data analysis technology to fulfill and improve the city service in Hong Kong.

Third Prize in the 15th Challenge Cup - National College Students' Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Contest

Mr WONG Nok Ching and Mr XU Yaohai, 2017 graduates of BSc Computer Science, won the Third Prize in the 15th Challenge Cup - National College Students' Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Contest for their project titled "FastLSH: A Similarity Search Engine on High-Dimensional Big Data", under the supervision of Dr Sarana NUTANONG.

Organized by the Communist Youth League of China, the China Association for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the All-China Students' Federation and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the 15th Challenge Cup is a bi-annual national competition for university students in China with an aim to provide a platform for innovation and nurture young talents in social sciences, science and technology. Over 750 projects from more than 300 universities in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau were shortlisted for the Challenge Cup Final held in Shanghai Jiao Tong University in November 2017.

Best Student Paper Award in the 11th International Conference on Simulated Evolution and Learning (SEAL 2017)

Mr Jialong SHI, a CS PhD student, together with his supervisor Prof Qingfu ZHANG and three co-authors from France, received the Best Student Paper Award for their paper titled "Using Parallel Strategies to Speed up Pareto Local Search" in the 11th International Conference on Simulated Evolution and Learning (SEAL 2017) held in Shenzhen, China in November 2017.
