Gold Award in the JOS Innovative IT Project Awards 2015-2016

Mr LIU Jiacheng, a CS undergraduate student, won the Gold Award in the JOS Innovative IT Project Awards 2015-2016, along with four other CityU students from EE Department, ACE Department and SS Department, for their project titled "QNO - A Mobile Solution to Queuing Problems". The achievement is apparent evidence of fruitful collaboration among students from multi-disciplines embedded in the Discovery-enriched Curriculum (DEC). The Gold winning team received a prize award of HK$30,000 for using advanced IT technologies to provide a time saving solution for restaurant queuing problems.

Organized by the Jardine One Solution (JOS), the contest encourages students in tertiary institutions to apply technology and innovation to deliver improvements in the retail, construction, utility and transport sectors.

CS PhD student won Best Paper Award 2015

Mr Ji Houling, a CS PhD student, together with his supervisors Dr Victor C.S. Lee and Dr Chi-Yin Chow, received the Best Paper Award for their co-authored paper titled "Coding-based Cooperative Caching in Data Broadcast Environments" in the 15th International Conference on Algorithms and Architectures for Parallel Processing (ICA3PP 2015), held in Zhangjiajie, China on 18-20 November, 2015.

ICA3PP is recognized as one of the main events of the world that is covering many dimensions of parallel algorithms and architectures, encompassing fundamental theoretical approaches, practical experimental projects, and commercial components and systems.

CS alumnus (2015) won Second Runner-up, Third Prize and Merit Award

Mr CHI Fung Cheung Rigsby, a 2015 graduate of BSc (Hons) in Computer Science, won the Second Runner-up in the 'Final Year Project Competition 2014-2015,' organized by the IEEE (Hong Kong) Computational Intelligence Chapter; the Third Prize in the 'Challenge Cup 2015 - Hong Kong University Students Extra-Curriculum Technology Contest' under the category of Information Technology; and the Merit Award in 'Crossover 2015 Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition (Hong Kong SAR Region)', under the supervision of Dr Sarana NUTANONG.

The winning project titled 'ActiveCrowd: Integrating Active Learning with Amazon Mechanical Turk' is a machine learning software platform that was designed and implemented to allow anyone who has basic programming knowledge to build machine learning models and to curate a training dataset for general purposes. The platform adopted active learning technique and integrated scikit-learn, which is a machine learning library written in Python and published under BSD license, with Amazon Mechanical Turk as the label annotator. The framework is able to reduce the implementation effort required for building machine learning models and makes the sample selection process completely automated.

CS alumnus (2014) won SIGMM Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis Award 2015

ACM Special Interest Group on Multimedia (SIGMM) is pleased to present the 2015 SIGMM Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis Award to Dr. Ting Yao and Honorable Mention recognition to Dr. Britta Meixner.

The award committee considers Dr. Yao's dissertation entitled 'Multimedia Search by Self, External, and Crowdsourcing Knowledge' worthy of the recognition as the thesis proposes an innovative knowledge transfer framework for multimedia search which is expected to have significant impact, especially in boosting the search performance for big multimedia data.
