To provide an academic platform for research students to present their research work and facilitate exchanges of ideas among students and faculty members, the Department organized the annual Research Student Workshop on 21-23 June 2017 on campus, followed by a refreshing guided walk to the Geopark in Sai Kung. Around 80 research students had actively participated by giving an oral/ poster presentation with well-performing students receiving Outstanding Presentation Awards/ Outstanding Poster Awards for their exceptional work.
In addition, this year the Department had added a new dimension to the Workshop by inviting five distinguished PhD alumni to give a talk and have sharing with students on career planning and development to raise their awareness of making an early preparation. The Workshop was warmly received with most participants expressed that the Workshop had achieved the objective of enhancing their professional development.
In support of the University's initiatives on entrepreneurship, the Department organized the Startup Engineering Workshop on 9 June 2017 to provide a platform for interested students to learn about resource available at CityU on nurturing entrepreneurship and the necessary knowledge students should possess in Startup Engineering Software Technologies Database. There was also a sharing session by successful entrepreneurs in which Mr David Chung and Ms Carmen Lam, BSc Creative Media 2013 graduates and Co-founders of the Animae Studio, had come back to CityU to share their first-hand experience on starting up their own business and give practical advice to aspiring students.
Around 30 students with engineering background attended. Following the talks, students had an open discussion with faculty members and the guest speakers, and were given an opportunity to seek consultation and guidance in a relaxing lunch setting. The Workshop came to a fruitful close with take-home Mini-hackathon sign-up for all participants.
In celebration of our graduating students' accomplishments, the Department hosted the CityU-CS Career Development Reception to provide an occasion for students and faculty members to get together before graduation. In addition, to better prepare students for entering the workforce, a number of company representatives had been invited to provide an opportunity for students to learn more about the latest trend in the IT industry and the skill sets required by employers.
We were delighted that the Reception was attended by around 100 students and faculty members. The Reception started with a talk on the latest development in the financial technology given by Dr Duncan Wong, Vice-President of Financial Technologies at the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), followed by a tea reception in which students had fruitful exchanges with the guest speaker and company representatives as well as genuine sharing among participants.
