CityU :: Program Managment
Project Summary:
-
customer: City University of Hong Kong

- application: Internet Programme Management System (i-PMS)
- technology: workflow
Introduction
The Program Management System works with our University Course Management System to streamline the management of various programs (degrees) within each department. Our system allows the Program Leader, usually an academic staff, to conveniently access and review data related to his/her program so that he/she can better management and support student learning.
i-PMS allows staff at the university to closely monitor student performance in relation to their programs - this is crucial to improve the standard of students and the quality of education.
Our Client
Established in 1984, the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has grown and developed at a remarkable pace to one of the leading tertiary institutes in Hong Kong. The number of students has increased significantly to more than 13,500 while number of academic programs offered has risen to more than 90. To meet this growing demand, the University has employed more than 800 full-time academic staff devoted to teaching, research and consultancy.
Business Needs
Expansion of the CityU has been rapid; nevertheless, it is also important to improve the standard of students, thus the quality of education. To achieve the goal, staff at the university sees the need of closely monitoring students? performance in relation to the programs that the university offers.
Given the Web-based software infrastructure that has been put in place by our Course Management System (i-CMS), CityU takes a further step to extend the system by offering more features and functionality related to students and their programs for a wider audience. We call this extended system the i-PMS.
Technology
Since it is an extension to the i-CMS, we designed and developed the i-PMS using the same set of web-tools, such as Perl and Java Script. This Internet accessible application server has to perform database connectivity to synchronize with the Registration Office for the most updated information.
Main features of the i-PMS include providing statistics on the performance of students by each program cohort. Besides, it also makes program information for each cohort year available to academic staff and advisors. Last but not least, I-PMS is able to show students? information on their status, curriculum, academic performance and their rankings in each course. These information on student performance and programs is highly relevant in the examination board meetings.
Business Benefits
With i-PMS, staff at the university is able to know each student better. That would become particularly helpful when a staff need to know the strengths and weakness of an individual. On the other hand, since i-PMS allows users to view the performance of individual programs, that become apparent for the school management to decide strengthening particular areas needed to improve the overall quality of education.
