Distinguished Paper Award of IEEE ICDCS 2026
Prof Jianping Wang and her postdoctoral fellow Dr Ziyao Huang have won the IEEE ICDCS 2026 Distinguished Paper Award for their paper titled “Panorama: LLM-Guided Heuristics for Digital Twin-Empowered Vehicular Edge Computing”.
The paper was presented at the IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS) held in Seoul, South Korea from 22 to 25 June 2026. IEEE ICDCS is a leading international conference organized by the IEEE Computer Society. It provides a platform for researchers and professionals to share and discuss the latest ideas and developments in Distributed Computing Systems.
Awarded at the 51st Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions
The research teams from the Department have achieved outstanding recognition at the 51st Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions (“IEIG”).
IEIG is dedicated exclusively to inventions and innovation. With the patronage of the World Intellectual Property Organization (“WIPO”), it is widely recognised as a premier global platform for showcasing high-impact inventions and facilitating collaboration among inventors, industry, and investors worldwide.
At this prestigious international exhibition, the teams received one Gold Medal with Jury Congratulations, one Gold Medal, one Silver Medal, and one Bronze Medal. These achievements reflect the collective efforts of our faculty members and team members in advancing cutting-edge research.

Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)
Prof Xiaohua Jia has been elected a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in recognition of his exceptional achievements and significant contributions to advancing data security and distributed computing systems.
This year, 71 scholars from 14 countries and regions were selected as ACM Fellows, including five from Hong Kong. Prof Jia is among this distinguished group, placing him in the top 1% of ACM’s more than 100,000 members worldwide.
Widely recognised internationally for his expertise in computer science, Prof Jia has made significant contributions in cloud computing, distributed systems, computer networks, mobile computing, and information security and privacy. His exceptional academic accomplishments, including over 450 publications in top-tier journals and conferences, recognition as one of the World’s Top 2% of Scientists for six consecutive years, and numerous prestigious honours, underscore his remarkable leadership and impact in the field.
30-day CVRPLib BKS Challenge
The OptVerse-CityU team, a collaboration between Prof Qingfu Zhang’s research group and Huawei, which includes former research staff Dr Fei Liu, research staff Dr Zidong Wang, and PhD students Mr Xin Chen, Mr Qinglong Hu, Mr Shunyu Yao, and Mr Kefeng Zheng, has won the 30-day CVRPLib BKS Challenge.
This prestigious competition challenges teams to produce the best known solutions (BKS) for the large-scale Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP), and the OptVerse-CityU team succeeded in generating BKS for 51 out of 100 instances. Notably, their algorithm incorporates key components designed by the Evolution of Heuristics (EoH) system, marking a significant milestone as the first algorithm with AI-designed elements to win in this rigorous contest. Developed by Professor Qingfu Zhang’s research group and Huawei, the EoH system (its first version was called AEL) showcases innovative integration of evolutionary search and large language models.
