Experience and Reflections

In this 5-day tour visit, I learned a lot about how to collaborate with others with different cultural backgrounds. This experience is very valuable since it is not easy to gather local and non-local students on an overseas trip.

Through the visit of esteemed institutions like Tokyo University, Waseda University, and the University of Tsukuba, I have a deeper understanding of Japanese academia. Our visit to IT Innovation Inc. was an insightful experience where we gained valuable knowledge about their innovative projects and methodologies.

Lastly, I want to thank the Department of Computer Science and professors for the opportunity to let me be a member of the Japan study tour.

The recent study tour in Tokyo, Japan was a profound blend of academic enrichment and cultural immersion. Each day in the technologically advanced and culturally rich country involved ceaseless excitement and a wealth of new academic knowledge.

The day following our arrival, I had the privilege of visiting the esteemed University of Tokyo in the morning, where a comprehensive campus tour gave me a glimpse of the academic life and rigor that the university embodies. In the afternoon, we took an exhilarating shuttle bus ride to the exquisite premises of Waseda University, where I had the opportunity to network with the researchers and learn more about Artificial Intelligence from their research findings.

The next morning at the renowned Tsukuba University was equally stimulating, as I was equipped with exciting insights about Machine Learning, Evolutionary Computation, etc. by enthusiastic research students. The afternoon involved a visit to IT Innovation Inc., which offered a fascinating perspective on the intersection of technology and business goals. I was also amazed by the company’s ambition to achieve a greener Japan in the future, and enlightened by the introduced technologies than can assist the cause.

The fourth day provided a cultural respite. Experiencing the tranquility of Sensoji Temple, engaging with diverse visitors, enjoying a culturally immersive samurai-themed ramen lunch, and exploring the lively Shibuya Crossing gave me an understanding of Tokyo's unique mix of tradition and modernity.

The Japan Study Tour organized by the CityU CS department was an eye-opening experience, including visits to prestigious universities such as Waseda, Tokyo, and Tsukuba universities. Every university offered a different perspective on how technologies and learning are evolving, and it was exciting and informative. Visiting IT Innovation allowed us to see practical examples of our work and gave us insights into Japan’s high-tech economy. This tour not only enriched my academic experience but also enhanced my understanding of the cultural and technological differences. It was a great privilege that has greatly influenced my career plans and my development as a person.

After visiting Japan, I connected with many other students from various backgrounds which are from different nationalities or different universities. On this trip, we visited three universities and one IT company, which experience broadened my horizons and deepened my understanding of Japanese culture during these five days.

Japan Study Tour 2024 has come to an end. It was a wonderful experience, full of learning, knowledge, and immersion in Japanese culture. Thank you so much for the support and guidance from the Department of Computer Science at CityUHK, Dr. Leung, and Dr. Lee before and throughout the journey.

This was my second time visiting Japan, and the country is a great place for exploring their traditional culture. They have a long history and have preserved their culture to this day. Especially noteworthy is their food culture, with a diverse and wide range of local cuisine. Ramen, Kaiseki, sushi - you name it! We tried the local ramen store in Asakusabashi called Iekei Ramen Bushouya (家系ラーメン武将家). Lekei means it only sells Shoyu ramen. The people were great and warm, and they served us kindly, even though we were foreigners.

Our visits to institutions like the University of Tokyo, Waseda University, the University of Tsukuba, and IT Innovation were all memorable. The most memorable moment was at Waseda University, where we communicated with local bachelor's and master's students. We shared a lot of experiences and cultural perspectives from Hong Kong and Japan, and we even had the opportunity to present together on how AI impacts our academics. I wish I could have another experience like this next time.

This trip was also a great opportunity for me to expand my bonds with other fellow Computer Science students, and to gain a deeper understanding of the local culture that I didn't have during my first Japan trip. It was a valuable chance to exchange ideas and have a learning experience in Japan. I am grateful for this 5-day outbound experience, and I will apply the knowledge I've gained to my studies.

The 5-day study tour to Japan proved to be an invaluable experience. I not only learned about cutting-edge technology but also built numerous relationships.

My favorite event was visiting Waseda University, where I explored the research of local graduate students. Each of us partnered with two Waseda students to present on generative AI. I thoroughly enjoyed discussing university life with them, and we agreed to keep in touch.

On June 6th, my friends and I planned a side trip. We chose to tour the attractions around Mount Fuji. Unfortunately, it was cloudy, and we struggled to get clear photos of the majestic mountain. Despite the weather, we enjoyed visiting places like Arakurayama Sengen Park and Oishi Park. At the end of the tour, I befriended a retired Australian lawyer. He was very friendly, and we exchanged contact information.

Additionally, I made friends with many international students from CityU. This trip made me realize the importance of networking and forming connections with people from diverse backgrounds and regions.

The study tour to Tokyo, Japan, was and will always be a memorable experience for me. From the moment we arrived, the vibrant energy of the city was noticeable. The campus tour of the world-renowned University of Tokyo was enlightening, providing a glimpse into the rigorous academic environment that fosters innovation and excellence. Equally impressive were the academic talks by postgraduate students at Waseda and Tsukuba University, where we engaged in stimulating discussions on various research topics. On top of that, the presentation on IT Innovation further broadened our understanding of Japan's technological advancements.

However, what I enjoyed most about Japan was its incredible culture, warm-hearted people, and exquisite food. This trip marked my first time trying sushi, and I’m thrilled that it happened in Japan, where the sushi was incredibly fresh and delicious. The culinary experiences didn’t stop there – we indulged in a variety of traditional dishes that showcased the rich flavors of Japanese cuisine.

Beyond the academics and food, the cultural experiences left a lasting impact on me. Whether it was exploring the historic temples, navigating the bustling streets of Shinjuku, or experiencing the serenity of Japanese gardens, every moment was filled with awe and wonder. The friendliness and hospitality of the Japanese people made our journey even more special.

Even now, after the trip, I still reminisce about the wonderful times we had in Japan. The study tour was not just an educational experience but a profound cultural immersion that I will cherish forever. The memories we created and the knowledge we gained have left an indelible mark on me, inspiring a deeper appreciation for Japan and its remarkable heritage.

It was a thrilling and exciting chance to explore the vibrant and unique atmosphere of a huge megapolis like Tokyo while enjoying the stay with my peers and professors. Being warmly greeted by the leading professionals in their sphere was very motivating and informative to know the direction in which I'm planning to move. The lectures of local university PhD students have given me more ideas about my final year project since I'm stepping into my 4th year. Overall, the experience was absolutely wonderful!
