MMALab@University of Tsukuba
Arrive at University of Tsukuba
In the morning of June 5, we took the Tsukuba Express to the Tsukuba station, and then took bus to the University of Tsukuba. The professors from the MMALab (Mathematical Modelling & Algorithms Laboratory) hosted us and the PhD students in the lab gave us impressive presentations on their research projects.
Introduction about the MMALab
Prof. Yasunori Futamura first gave us an introduction about the MMALab. The research areas of the lab include Machine Learning and Data Science, Development of highly parallel algorithms for scientific and technological simulations and Optimization.
Broadening Horizons on Quantum Computing
Mr. Changzhou Long, one of the PhD students, gave us a presentation on his research, Quantum Algorithm for Regularized Spectral Clustering. This paper was published in ICML, the top conference in AI area. He proposed a new quantum machine learning algorithm, QRSC, which has obvious computational advantages in non-convex or nested structures. Finally, he expressed the hope that to the next decade, the quantum machine learning algorithms will be applied to real quantum computers. This presentation broadened our horizons on quantum computing, a cutting-edge filed of current computer science research.
Souvenir Presenting
After the presentations by several PhD students, Prof. Howard Leung and Dr. Kenneth Lee presented our hosts with the souvenirs we prepared. We expressed our gratitude for the impressive presentations given by our host and took a group photo before departing with them.
