Champion in Social Innovation (SI) CEO Competition 2017
Mr SZE Cheuk Fai Francis, a BSc Computer Science student, won the Champion in the Social Innovation (SI) CEO Competition for Tertiary Students 2017, along with three other CityU students from the Department of Information Systems and the Department of Marketing, for their business plan titled ElderTreks. The business idea is to offer local tours that hire elderly as guides and use a mobile app to let participants explore genuine community culture in different dimensions. The achievement has demonstrated synergy and fruitful results generated from cross-disciplinary collaboration among students.
The Champion team will receive a start-up fund of HK$150,000 to carry out their business plan, with CEO guidance and professional advisory services for idea implementation, in addition to a 9-day social innovation trip to the UK to visit social innovation projects and a two-month corporation internship offer.
Jointly organized by the Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development (SIE) Fund and Youth.gov.hk, the Competition aims to enhance understanding of "poverty relief" and "social innovation", inspire innovative ideas and actions to tackle social and poverty problems.
Jonathan L. Gross Award for Academic Excellence 2017
Mr Rudra Gopinath, a BSc Computer Science student participating in the Joint Bachelor's Degree Program between City University of Hong Kong and Columbia University. Mr Gopinath, currently studying in Columbia University after having completed three years of study at CityU, has been selected to receive the Jonathan L. Gross Award for Academic Excellence, which is awarded annually to the most distinguished General Studies major in the Department of Computer Science of Columbia University.
Bronze Medal in the Second China Collegiate Programming Contest Finals (CCPC 2016)
A team of BSc Computer Science students comprising Mr FUNG Chung Kit, Miss ZHENG Wanying and Mr LIU Pengze won the Bronze Medal in the Second China Collegiate Programming Contest Finals (CCPC 2016) held in Ningbo, China in November 2016, under the supervision of Dr Minming LI.
Hosted by Ningbo Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University, CCPC 2016 attracted over 120 teams from more than 90 universities in China to compete for the awards.
