Profile:
Liu
Wenyin received his B.Engg. and M.Engg. degrees in Computer
Science from the Tsinghua University, Beijing in 1988 and
1992 respectively, and his D.Sc. in Information Management Engineering from
the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology in 1998. He had worked at Tsinghua as a faculty member for three
years and at Microsoft Research China/Asia as a full time Researcher for
another three years. Starting from January 2002, he has been an Assistant
Professor in the Department of Computer Science, City
University of Hong Kong.
His research interests include anti-phishing, question answering, graphics
recognition and document analysis, sketch understanding and sketch-based user
interfaces, pattern recognition and performance evaluation, user modeling and
personalization, and multimedia information retrieval. He has authored or
co-authored more than 180 publications and more than 20 patents granted or
pending in these areas.
Liu Wenyin played a major role in developing the Machine Drawing
Understanding System (MDUS), which won First Place
in the Dashed
Line Recognition Contest (http://www.loria.fr/~tombre/grec95.html) held
during the First IAPR Workshop on Graphics Recognition at
Pennsylvania
State
University
, 1995. In 1997, he won a
Third Prize in the ACM/IBM First International Java Programming Contest (ACM
Quest for Java'97) (http://www.acm.org/jquest/webquest1.html). In 2003, he
was awarded the ICDAR Outstanding Young Researcher Award
(http://www.cs.cityu.edu.hk/~liuwy/icdar-award.jpg)
by the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) for his significant impact in the research
domain of graphics recognition, engineering drawings recognition, and
performance evaluation. He is Chair of IAPR TC10 (on
Graphics Recognition) from 2006. He is a guest professor of University of Science
and Technology of China,

of IEEE, a member of IEEE Computer Society, IEEE Education Society, and
ACM.
