| Background |
The 1st International Database Workshop was held in Hong Kong in December 1989, organized by the Hong Kong Computer Society in cooperation with Hong Kong Polytechnic. Its main objective was to promote database technologies in Hong Kong. Its scope was broad coverage of database advanced technologies, methodologies and software tools. The workshop has been an international annual event ever since. The 10th International Database Symposium will be hosted by the Computer Science Department at City University of Hong Kong. Program suggestions and inquiries should be sent to the Conference Chair:

| Scope |
First generation database is hierarchical and network databases. Second generation database is relational database. As the computer technology moves into multimedia and Internet systems, many feel the limitation of relational database in these data intensive application systems. This symposium will discuss the potential candidate for the third generation post-relational database. The XML Wave is coming because it provides a simple, standard, self-describing way of storing and exchanging text and data. A XML-based DBMS provides storage and retrieval of self-describing XML information without having to detour over other formats. We will explore the potential of XML database in the symposium. The combination of business needs to access critical data regardless of location and of opportunities of new personal information services and applications has necessitated mobile database to access data by mobile. The symposium will investigate the computing and data models for mobile system, data management and mobility management for wireless network and the mobile web access and Internet applications. The question for the symposium is whether XML database, mobile database, object-oriented database, multimedia database or Internet Web-based database will be the potential post-relational database.
