Project Mission In this project, we are developing a Web-based 3D collaborative engine. This engine is basically a set of tools that will support 3D collaboration and interaction over the internet. The engine will include some of the techniques that we have developed. In particular, it will include methods for rendering and progressively transmitting flexible objects and for handling 3D interactions over the Internet.

Applications We expect that the engine will have many Web-based applications, including collaborative engineering design, collaborative surgery, multi-user computer gaming, remote sensing and visualization, training and distant education. For example, in collaborative engineering design, engineers at different geographical locations may meet and work together to design and refine an engineering product, such as a mechanical part, over the Internet. This will save the designers the need to meet physically and hence the travelling time and cost, until perhaps a later stage. Similarly, a group of art designers may use the system to create and refine artistic sculptures. A group of doctors may perform a surgery together with the system. We expect that all these applications will benefit if they are developed based on our collaborative engine. In particular, our efficient rendering method for flexible objects and our progressive model transmission techniques will allow interactive object sharing and editing over the Internet. We believe that the collaborative engine will relieve the effort of individual companies / institutes in developing their Web-based collaborative software, by building their applicaionts on our engine.
