CityU Web Hacker, What's Goldfish?
CityU Web Hacker - Introduction
The goldfish (Carassius auratus auratus) was one of the earliest fish to be domesticated, and is still one of the most commonly-kept aquarium fish. A relatively small member of the carp family (which also includes the koi and the Crucian carp), the goldfish is a domesticated version of a dark-gray carp native to East Asia (first domesticated in China) that was introduced to Europe in the late 17th century. It may grow to a maximum length of 23 inches (59.0 cm) and a maximum weight of 6.6 lb (3.0 kg), although this is rare: most individuals grow to under half this size.

CityU Web Hacker - Goldfish Market
Cityu web hacker
CityU Web HackerLocated comfortably on Tung Choi Street and Boundary Street, Mong Kok, the Goldfish Market is always on the tourist's destinations list. Reaching there is by no means hard - the Market is set close enough to a MTR station and at the intersection point of all traffic - Mong Kok. Placed in the heart of Kowloon, way too many buses will take you there, or at least somewhere within walking distance! Ornamental fish keeping is a Chinese tradition, and aquariums have the added advantage of "luck-bringing qualities when properly positioned in the home". It is a Eden for all fish-lovers and non-fish-lovers alike! The Goldfish Market of Hong Kong comprises two different aspects. Early morning from around four to seven, hawkers gather near Mong Kok Stadium on Boundary Street to sell ornamental fish on a semi-wholesale basis. This has started since the 1960s at the Mong Kok Station, and moved to its current location during the 1980s. After that, some hawkers, with some cash in their hands, started opening fish shops on Tung Choi Street. More and more followed and a street of fish shops appeared. The indoor Market sells for higher than its outdoor counterpart, but that may be the cost of not having to wake up before dawn!

CityU Web HackerMost of the stores have general stock, but some specialise in various aspects of fishkeeping, including, of course, salt water, goldfish, koi, African cichlids, angelfish, discus, aquatic plants, and dry goods. You don't just find one store of each type - for every interest there are numerous specialists. The specialist stores generally take a more sophisticated approach to their sales - you get to see their fish in tanks rather than plastic bags! - but they are also crowded and small. They have a huge number of varieties and species of fish, many of which you have never seen before. If you have never been to the Goldfish Market of Hong Kong, you are really missing out a lot. It may not be the most popular tourist destination in Hong Kong, but definitely, you have never been to Hong Kong, without being to the Goldfish Market!
