Dr. Andy Chun received the B.Sc. degree from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1981, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1983 and 1987, respectively. After obtaining his Ph.D. degree, Dr. Chun joined Prof. Patrick Winston's MIT high-tech spin-off, Ascent Technology Inc. as a Senior Scientist. Ascent is an AI (Artificial Intelligence) company that provides R &D services on the development of mission critical resource scheduling/allocation systems for the US Department of Defense as well as airlines/airports around the world. Dr. Chun returned to Hong Kong in 1989 to join the Information Engineering Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong as Lecturer. He later worked for IF Computer, a German software firm, as Managing Director of their HK office.

Dr. Chun joined the Department of Electronic Engineering at the City University of Hong Kong in March 1994 and later transferred to the Department of Computer Science in 2001 where he acts as the Program Leader for the flagship B.Sc. Computer Science program as well as the Group Leader for the Software Engineering Subject Group and the Software Engineering Research Group.

He is jointly a Consultant for the CityU Professional Services Limited and an active IT consultant and technologist in the Asia-Pacific region. He has worked on numerous Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems for companies like the Mass Transit Railway, Hospital Authority, Airport Authority, etc. to maximize efficiency/productivity and streamline business processes. He is the only person to have been awarded 5 times the "Innovative Applications of AI Award" from the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) in years 1999, 2000, 2005, 2007 and 2008. In 2005, he was awarded an "IT Excellence Award" from the Hong Kong Computer Society. In 2006, he received an "Asia-Pacific ICT Award" (APICTA) for the "Best Industrial Application."

He is also an External Examiner for the Hong Kong Institute of Education and the Open University of Hong Kong.


Research Interests

His research interests are in Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Object Technologies, Software Architectures and Web technologies. He is particularly interested in solving Scheduling, Optimization, Resource Allocation and Datamining problems. Recently, his research focused on Knowledge Management and Collaboration with the use of Weblog and Wiki technologies.
