Projects that I supervised during 2002/2003 academic year:
- Semantic Web
KWONG, King Hei Francis (BSCS) - Award Winner of IEE HK YMS CompetitionThe World Wide Web is probably the richest source of information now. But we have not utilized this source of information to its full potential since the current web is designed for human consumption; machine processing on web documents is not possible (or at least very difficult). Semantic Web, a state-of-the-art concept of web architecture proposed by W3C, aims to change the current web into a machine processable web. As a research project report on Semantic Web, this report includes discussion on what, why, when, how questions about Semantic Web. By building a prototype of the Semantic Web, the project evaluates this new concept and its related technologies in a concrete and in-depth manner. The prototype does not only serve as a proof for the feasibility, applicability and new possibility of Semantic Web, it is also one of the very few Semantic Web applications at this moment which can serve as an example for future Semantic Web application development.
- Application of Ant Colony Optimization
WANG Ying Pei (BSIT)The Traveling salesman problem (TSP) is the problem of finding a shortest closed tour which visits all the cities in a given set. Ant Colony Optimization is a good approach to find the shortest path. Because according to the real ants world, Ants deposit a certain amount of pheromone while walking, and each ant probabilistically prefers to follow a direction rich in pheromone. This elementary behavior can be used to explain how they can find the shortest path and reconnects a broken line after the sudden appearance of obstacle. Therefore, artificial ant can use this characteristic and apply to real world problem. In my project, I will use computer language such as C# to simulate this method and observe the parameters which will affect the result of the simulation. I will also test the adaptability of the method to the changing environment or in a partly-meshed environment. Also I may compare this method with other search method such as Genetic Algorithm, etc.
- UML CASE Tool Using XML, XSLT and Microsoft .NET Framework
CHONG, Shing Man (BSCS)To ease the design and implementation processes in Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) by using the UML notation and code generation through this system. Most of the template codes will be generated based on the diagram represented in XML format. Develop program that generates UML class diagrams represented in XML format. Template code generation based on the class diagram (represented in XML).
- Real time stock market data broadcast system
WONG, Hau Yan (BSCS)Study the design and implementation of distributed databases. In this project, a data broadcast system would be build. It will mainly focus on the real time distribution of data, in the environment distributed database. Also XML, Java and .Net will be used for implementing this system. XML would be used as a data communication protocol between client and server, by doing this the communication protocol can be standardized.
- A 3-tier job recruitment engine implemented by a .NET framework
LEE, Chi Fai (BSCS)To design a job recruitment engine providing a platform to the job seekers and employers to communicate. To implement a object-oriented design of a COM based three-tier architecture system. To examine the performance enhancement by deploying the Microsoft transaction server as the transaction monitor. To test the ASP.NET framework to build the web services and the applications. And to prove the interoperability of the C++ COM component and the ASP.NET runtime. Develop a job searching and recruitment engine, implemented by a set of business components (objects) written by C++ and Microsoft Foundation Class. A Database Server acts as the data services. It will connect to the business components through ADO. A web server (Internet Information Server 4.0), which will use ASP.NET web services to communicate with the business components. A Transaction Server, which will be used to manage the business, objects. A Web Site (ASP.NET Web Applications) provides a communication platform between the job seekers and the employers. A Windows Application (written by Microsoft Foundation Classes) allow the administrator to perform various administration functions
- Web Service Using SUN ONE Architecture
CHAN Lui (BSIT)In this project, I intend to study what web service is, the technical specifications of the protocols involved, the general architecture of a web service and the solutions offered by Sun and Microsoft. A Job Resume Center is to be developed as to demonstrate the benefits of the web services.
- Internet .NET Project
WONG Yu Sing (BSIT)For fast moving consumer goods industry, many salesmen have to travel around and deal with many customers everyday. In each customers order, salesmen have to check stock, print an invoices, get back payments, trace goods delivery, etc. In fact, each orders has to take several days for each paper works, it is definitely time wasting and inefficient. This project will develop a new application that runs on Pocket PCs, and can take advantage of all the capabilities of these state-of-the-art devices. Mobile salesmen selling from their trucks can load inventory, sell items to customers, print invoices, collect payments, track all of this without paper records, and reconcile their transactions automatically at the end of the day.
- Development of XML Data Exchange using Web Service
YAM Kin Nang (BSIT)In this project, I will build one Hotel Web Server and one Travel Portal Web Server. The research project involves the implementation of XML Data Exchange/Sharing and its application to an e-commerce platform for on-line hotel reservation using XML, SOAP, ASP.NET and C#.NET A Hotel Web Server generates XML documents while Portal Web Service accesses the document through HTTP. Then Web Service distributes some services. They are all implemented by ASP.NET and C#.NET. User communities use VS.NET to build their Web Services and communicate by ubiquitous Internet standards, such as XML and HTTP. Between them, VS.NET encodes data into SOAP as a simple XML document and using XSLT to transform to a corresponding partner’s format. Users can then share their develop applications anywhere more quickly and easily.
- Web-Based Appointment Scheduling System
HO Siu Lun Alan (BSIT)The aims of this project is to build a web based appointment scheduling system by using Visual Studio .NET. It is a system can help you to manage personal tasks over the Internet. The web application can provide a convenient way to schedule appointments. Therefore, you can check and reschedule your tasks in anytime and anywhere. Moreover, you can create your own groups that let your friends and colleagues to join in and share their schedules with you. It also permits other scheduling system to negotiate with each other’s to find an available time. The transaction would then automatically be added to both schedules.
- AI Chatbot Implementation with .NET
PUN Hiu Kam (BSIT)This project is to implement Chatbot Alice with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET. Chatbot Alice is one kind of AI applications and you can chat with Alice by using keyboard. It is free source written in java and available on the web for interested people to develop it. There was a theory circulating in applied AI called "Case-Based Reasoning" or CBR that maps well onto the ALICE algorithm. Another term, borrowed from pattern recognition, is "nearest-neighbor classification."
