CS3471 An Introduction to Files and Database
Course Aims & Objectives: The aim of this course is to introduce the fundamental concepts of storing and processing data on external storage media. The emphasis is on the use of files and databases. File organisation and management techniques are presented as the underlying physical structures supporting a data base system. Upon the completion, students will be able to understand the organisation and functionality of files and databases; manipulate file and database contents for information retrieval purposes. Teaching Pattern: Duration of course: 1 semester Suggested lecture/tutorial/laboratory mix: 2 hrs lecture; 1 hr. tutorial. Assessment Pattern: Examination duration: 2 hours Percentage of coursework, examination, etc.: 30% CW; 70% Exam Grading pattern: Standard (A+AA-...F) For a student to pass the course, at least 30% of the maximum mark for the examination must be obtained.
