In addition to the traditional areas of research in computer science, students are encouraged to choose applications from other research areas in science, engineering, and business. Students may also look at the specialised areas of staff members to identify a research area.

Graphics modeling and animation, pattern recognition, machine vision, multimodal interface, multimedia document management, image and speech processing, image/video retrieval, and virtual reality.
Computer Networks and Distributed Systems:
Computer networks, Internet and eCommerce technologies, mobile communications, web computing, object-oriented systems, system performance evaluation and simulation, and parallel/distributed algorithms.
Mobile and Real-time Computing:
Mobile real-time data management and monitoring, location-dependent services, location management of moving objects, and mobile multimedia applications.
Algorithms and Theory:
Complexity theory, cryptography, computational biology, combinatorial optimisation, data structure and algorithms, computational geometry, Steiner problems, on-line algorithms, computational economics and finance, object theory, eCommerce protocols and algorithms.
Information Security:
Cryptography and security protocols, Internet and e-commerce security, information security modeling and management, and digital watermarking.
Artificial Intelligence:
Search algorithms, knowledge representation, expert systems, constraint programming, software agents, and learning/evolutionary algorithms.
Software Engineering and Object Technology:
Software quality and testing, development tools and methodologies.
