FAQ for Minor in Computing
1. Can part-time students apply for the Minor in Computing? The Minor in Computing is offered to all students (full-time or part-time) from any department, except students from the following major programmes: BSc (Hons) Computer Science, BSc (Hons) Computer Studies, BEng (Hons) Computer Engineering, BSc (Hons) Creative Media, and BEng (Hons) e-Logistics and Technology Management. Starting from Cohort 2008 and thereafter, students of BEng (Hons) Information Engineering, BEng (Hons) Information Engineering (Business Intelligence Minor) and BEng (Hons) Information Engineering (Law Minor) cannot take the Minor in Computing.
However, some of the courses in the curriculum are generally only offered to full-time students and they may be scheduled in the day-time. As a part-time student, you may not have the same diverse choices of the courses as the full-time students have. In addition, you need to pay the tuition fee in credit-basis like you do in the major programme.
2. What documents I need to submit to apply for the Minor in Computing?
Step 1: To apply for the Minor in Computing, you need to submit an application form, which could be downloaded at http://www.cs.cityu.edu.hk/academic/minorincomputing_form.pdf. Please note that you must get prior approval from your major programme department before submitting the application form.
Step 2: Once you have fulfilled or will fulfill the minor requirements in the last semester of your study, you are required to submit a request for the award of Minor via http://csapp.cs.cityu.edu.hk/mic_award.
3. Must I apply it in year 1 or can I apply in year 2 or later?
There is no hard requirement on which year you should apply for the Minor in Computing. But the earlier you apply it, the easier for yourself to allocate your time and study schedule.
4. Should I first submit the application form and then take the courses or should I take the courses first and then submit the application?
Again, there is no hard requirement on which one you should do it first. You can submit the application even before taking any CS courses. However, you are reminded to obtain prior approval from your major programme department before submitting the application form within the add/drop period of each semester as specified by ARRO.
5. If I have successfully applied for the minor, can I withdraw it afterwards?
You can withdraw the Minor anytime. Please inform us in writing not later than the add/drop period of the last semester of your study so that we can update our record and inform the ARRO accordingly.
6. What does the requirement mean by "a maximum of 6 credit units can be used to fulfill both the major and minor programme requirements"?
It means a maximum of 6 credit units can be double counted to fulfill both your major and the minor programme requirements. If the courses (e.g., cs2363) you have taken present at your major programme's curriculum (core or elective or free elective), two of them (6 credit units in total) will be counted for the Minor in Computing as well. In contrast, if the CS courses you have taken are OOD elective courses (NOT present at your own programme's curriculum), they can be freely counted to fulfill both the OOD and the minor programme requirements.
Note to students of BSc (Hons) Computing Mathematics: In addition to taking 6 credit units of CS courses as core/elective/free elective courses to fulfill the requirements of your major programme, you are required to take at least 9 credit units of CS courses as OOD in order to fulfill the requirements of Minor in Computing.
7. Does the Minor in Computing allow credit transfer?
Credit transfer is also allowed to fulfill the minor programme requirements. Please note that there is a maximum of 6 credit units that can be transferred. You should follow the university's guideline and procedure to make the application. http://www.cityu.edu.hk/arro/student_service/service_centre/credit_transfer.html
