The rapid growth of computing and information technology is now a permanent feature of society. It is one of the main factors in the continuing rise of business productivity, and it has heavily affected the ways in which we work and interact with friends and colleagues. Educational efforts in this regard are essential to achieving general literacy and providing an adequate professional workforce.
The Department of Computer Science at City University provides a comprehensive education that equips our graduates with the technical skills, expert knowledge and professional ethics that are necessary to participate and play leadership roles in the digital revolution. The Department achieves this by recruiting and continuously developing high calibre teaching and research staff, stringently monitoring our teaching quality and academic programmes, carrying out cutting edge research and building close collaboration with local industries in strategic areas.
In its last evaluation exercise, the University Grants Committee recognised the quality of our teaching staff as amongst the best in local institutions. Our BSCS Honours degree is the first degree in computing accredited by the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers (HKIE). In addition to the design and delivery of well-balanced degree programmes, we stress the importance of out of classroom experience by organising study tours, arranging student exchange programmes and supporting our students when they take part in local and international IT contests and other extracurricular activities.
Our research endeavours have led to the establishment of the Centre for Innovative Applications of Internet and Multimedia Technology (the AIMtech Centre), which focuses on the applied R&D of Internet security, multimedia content protection, mobile computing, multimedia workflow systems and virtual environments. InPAC, the Centre for Internet Security and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) Applications, has been established to develop a campus wide system to promote the use of PKI amongst staff and students. In 2003, the Department received a generous donation from Sun Microsystems to establish the first Sun Center of Excellence in Pervasive Computing in Hong Kong.
Department staff are currently conducting more than 100 R&D projects with total funding of over HK$42 million. Our research underpins the academic programmes, which prepare our students for the challenges that they will face in their professional lives. The combination of excellence in teaching and applied research reflects the quality and dedication of our staff that feeds into the educational experience of our students.
This prospectus highlights the range of taught and research degree programmes that we offer, as well as our staff profile, research activities and support facilities. We look forward to prospective students joining our Department for a learning experience that will be both enriching and edifying.
